Methanol 99.9% HPLC (CH₃OH,) is one of the most commonly used organic modifiers in reversed-phase chromatography. Although the solvent offers certain advantages and disadvantages, one of Methanol’s key strengths, from a chromatographic perspective, is that it offers substantially different selectivity, and as such, are valuable for method development purposes.

There are a range of organic solvents that are suitable for use as the organic modifier in reversed-phase liquid chromatography; in practice though, only a few are routinely used.
